Amy demonstrates that being aware of your body language, and accepting the ability to 'fake it until you make it' can lead you to 'fake it until you become it!'. If we send the time before a gig, ensuring that our own frame of mind is positive and confident, it will resonate throughout our who performance. That's why Amy Cuddy's advice is so useful to performers. Our own confidence greatly affects the overall reactions that our magic performance produce. Spending time working on your posture, stance, and body language can radically transform your success as a magician. A slouched, closed posture signals insecurity. Magicians need to establish their confidence and proficiency as quickly as possible. 'hang on, you're not really a magician are you!' This feeling stems from feeling that you are just playing the part of a magician, rather than actually being one. It's not so much about the magic tricks going wrong, but an irrational feeling that everyone will say. Many magicians experience a fear of 'being found out' as if everyone will suddenly accuse them of not really being a magician. This stage fright can often present itself as a nagging doubt in your own abilities, act, or the audience's interest in seeing your magic.

Even established professional magicians experience a form of stage fright when they first start performing at a gig. That's a lot of work to do, in the first few seconds of your introduction. When a magician approaches a new group of people, he or she has several obstacles to overcome including:ĭealing with alpha spectators in a power play for group attention.

A positive and confident approach goes a long way towards smoothing your introduction into the group and their willingness to give you attention. In the first few moments of your introduction, spectators are making assumptions about you based on your appearance, posture, expression and behaviour. As you approach each group, you are making a first impression, in much the same way as a job interview. Chris Landon, the writer/director of Freaky, has some experience doing that with the Happy Death Day films, and it seems that Freaky is another success in that regard.Close up magicians cold call social groups and attempt to form a relationship many times each booking. Most movies tell stories that we would never see in reality, but if you can get an audience invested in the characters, then you can usually take your story to even more unbelievable places, and the viewer will follow. No matter what story you're telling, the audience has to be able to buy into the situation. And that's really what carries the day, I think, in a lot of this. It’s the ability for all of us, like I said, to connect to those very vulnerable moments, when you're over your head and out of water, you're feeling, you know, picked on or isolated. And that's part of the magic trick of buying the situation. … I think part of what helps us buy the body swap - and obviously Kathryn’s performance tremendously so as Millie - is that I think we emotionally buy those feelings and connections. But what I loved the most was that there's an emotional believability that goes throughout. So we were putting so many things on its ear and having so much fun. I think Chris is so talented at blending comedy and horror.

While certainly Freaky is meant to be somewhat over the top, Vince Vaughn recently told our own ReelBlend podcast that there's a magic trick the movie uses to get the audience to buy in.

The biggest issue being that Vaughn's character is a serial killer.

On the other hand, if you want to cause yourself to sneeze, try looking at a bright light. It will then stop your body from continuing the sneeze reflex.

Pressing the skin there causes your brain to think something is wrong and sends an alarm. Freaky doesn't forgo the laughs entirely, but it is a body-swap horror-comedy where Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton swap bodies. Press around the bridge of your nose to stop a sneeze.
